Set against a soaring canvas of projected images\, “Fela! The Concert” is driven by the electrifying rhythms from a live 10-piece Afrobeat band  “Chop and Quench” with nine singers and dancers who bring to life Fela’s provocative spirit. “Fela! The Concert” features members of the original Broadway cast from the highly acclaimed Tony Award winning production Fela! \n  \n

SUMMARY:After hours with Tadataka Unno Quartet @ Fat Cat\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:“His name is Tadataka Unno. The things I love about his playing are he has a tremendous sense of dynamics. And he doesn’t just bang the piano. He touches it like Hank Jones\, Teddy Wilson and Tommy Flanagan. He’s not afraid to play something beautiful. It’s more of a challenge to play something beautiful. It’s challenging to do that and still make it interesting.” – Roy Hargrove \n  \nAfter hours at 1:30 am (post Friday night\, but actually Sat morning)  with Tadataka Unno Quartet featuring Justin Robinson – sax\, Taru Alexander – drums\, and Danton Boller – bass! \n

SUMMARY:Elysian Fields @ The Owl Music Parlor\, Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow are the writers who make up the critically-acclaimed\, little known (at least in their own country) band that formed in New York in the late ’90s and went on to develop a cult following of faithful fans around the world. After a dalliance with a major label for their first album in 1996\, Elysian Fields recorded their second full-length with Steve Albini\, generating a response from the label that had the band asking to be released from their contract. They went on to forge a path outside of the mainstream\, recording with a number of independent labels over the years\, most recently for Microcultures in France and Ojet in the US. They are “musicians’ musicians\,” attracting esteemed players from around the world to sit in with their live sets. In late 2018\, they released their 11th album Pink Air\, a post-apocalyptic rock & roll joyride which New York Music Daily called\, “Another dark lyrical masterpiece from Elysian Fields… One of the half-dozen best albums to come out in 2018.” \nWith Sam Levin (drums) and Danton Boller (bass).

He touches it like Hank Jones\, Teddy Wilson and Tommy Flanagan. He’s not afraid to play something beautiful. It’s more of a challenge to play something beautiful. It’s challenging to do that and still make it interesting.” – Roy Hargrove \nTadataka Unno trio with Danton Boller and Jason Brown. 8 -10:30pm
