DESCRIPTION:The Roy Hargrove Big Band\nSunday May 31 • RWJBarnabas Plaza Stage @ 6pm \nOriginally started in the rehearsal space that would later become the Jazz Gallery\, the Roy Hargrove Big Band had its inaugural performance at the Panasonic Village Jazz Festival in 1995. Since then\, the band has toured domestically and internationally and has played everywhere from the Blue Note Tokyo to the Hollywood Bowl. As with everything Roy\, his broad musical range is evident in his big band. You can expect to hear everything from his quintet compositions\, bebop and lush ballads to soulful funk\, hip-hop\, and Latin songs. The arrangements are comprised of Roy’s original works\, timeless standards and new music by band members and other contemporaries whom he respected. \nIn 2022 Roy Hargrove Legacy\, the company founded by his wife and daughter re-launched The Roy Hargrove Big Band to continue Roy’s music\, spirit and the big band sound that he loved. A true all-star cast consisting of mostly original band members with the addition of a few bright\, young talents\, this powerhouse ensemble continues to electrify audiences and bring down the house at every performance. Brilliantly lead on stage by Bruce Williams\, lead alto and big band member since 1997\, and Jason Marshall\, baritone saxophonist and also long-time member of the big band\, who serves as second conductor. Roy’s wife Aida Brandes-Hargrove is the band’s executive and artistic director. \nIn addition to performing at venues and festivals across the country the big band is now in its fifth year of its successful monthly residency at The Jazz Gallery\, the iconic NYC venue co-founded by Roy. Last year marked the 30th anniversary for both The Jazz Gallery and The Roy Hargrove Big Band\, a testament to the enduring legacy of one of jazz’s most influential trumpeters. Before he was a semifinalist in the 1992 Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition\, Jones co-founded jazz band Black Note. The group’s hard-swing sound propelled them to first place in the prestigious John Coltrane Young Artist Competition in 1991. Jones contributed his skillfulness as both musician and producer on all four Black Note recordings: 43rd & Degnan and L.A. Underground (World Stage Records)\, Jungle Music (Columbia)\, and Nothin’ But the Swing (Impulse!). The band toured Europe athe U.S. and was the opening act for Wynton Marsalis. \nJones gained the privilege of playing sideman to vibist Milt Jackson. From 1995 to 1998\, he was a member of Arturo Sandoval’s band and is featured on Sandoval’s Grammy-award winning release Hot House (N2K). Subsequently\, Jones recorded with Horace Silver on Jazz Has a Sense of Humor (Impulse!). \nJones was a member of Roy Hargrove’s Quintet and is featured on Roy Hargrove’s CD releases on Verve: Moment To Moment\, Hard Groove\, Nothing Serious\, and Rh Factor’s Distractions. Jones can be heard on a host of recordings\, including Kurt Elling’s Grammy-nominated Night Moves (Concord) and Eric Reed’s Here (Max Jazz). Jones has worked with Sonny Rollins\, Ernestine Anderson\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Wynton Marsalis\, Cedar Walton\, Frank Wess\, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band\, Houston Person\, Billy Childs\, Eric Reed\, Ryan Kisor\, Eric Alexander\, Bill Charlap\, Michael Brecker\, Herbie Hancock\, and Hank Jones. In 2000\, Jones released his debut CD\, Vol 1… Straight Swingin’\, on his own label\, WJ3 Records. Subsequent releases include Vol II… Don’t Knock The Swing (2002); Volume III (2007); and WE 2 (2008)\, a trombone and piano recording featuring Wycliffe Gordon and Eric Reed. Jones’ latest release is The Next Phase (2010).
