SUMMARY:Justin Vivian Bond: The Return of Down on Creation – On Top of the World with The Carpenters\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:Justin Vivian Bond: The Return of Down on Creation – On Top of the World with The Carpenters\nOne story that downtown cabaret star Justin Vivian Bond likes to tell involves Bond’s seven-year-old self-singing The Carpenters’ “Superstar” at school during show-and-tell from behind the classroom TV set. Fast forward to the present and the performance artist and transgender trailblazer has finally transformed this lifelong passion for The Carpenters into a gorgeous full-length show. For this special evening at Joe’s Pub\, Mx Bond explores the extensive catalog of gender outlaw and body dysmorphia poster-girl Karen Carpenter\, bringing a thoughtful new context to the troubled life of the ’70s icon. Experiencing the Carpenters’ classic American pop songs through the prism of a pioneering performance artist illuminates the artistry of both and shines a light on a tantalizing new corner of the American Songbook.

SUMMARY:Taylor Mac A 24-Decade History of Popular Music\, Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Mac : A 24-Decade History of Popular Music\n\n\nThu\, Mar 15 – Sat\, Mar 24\n\n\n\n\n“I believe theater is community and I think of myself as a community activist; someone whose job it is to bring people together\, give them a shared experience and remind them of the things they’ve forgotten\, dismissed or buried.” —Taylor Mac \nFor the past 20 years\, Taylor Mac has created spectacular award-winning performance events that at once provoke and embrace his diverse audience with their passion. Equal parts community organizer\, Elizabethan fool and bedazzled bon vivant\, Taylor Mac “doesn’t just defy categorization; he makes the categories themselves seem irrelevant.” (Time Out NY)  \nIn Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music\, he charts the history of popular music and activism in America\, from the nation’s founding in 1776 to the present day. This uniquely original performance art concert featuring many special guests will be presented over 2 weeks. Winner of the 2017 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History\, and a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Drama\, the production has been hailed by The New York Times critic Wesley Morris as “one of the great experiences of my life.”  \n[24-Decade] is “about becoming who we Americans want to be\, by recognizing who we have been. It’s about artistic confrontation\, reinterpretation and personal transcendence.” (Taylor Mac) \n\n\n\n\nThu\, Mar 15\, 2018\nCHAPTER I:  1776-1836\nThe American Revolution from the perspective of the Yankee Doodle Dandy\, the early women’s lib movement\, an epic battle between drinking songs and early Temperance songs; a dream sequence where the audience is and the heteronormal narrative of colonization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSat\, Mar 17\, 2018\nCHAPTER II:  1836-1896\nWalt Whitman and Stephen Foster go head to head for the title of Father of the American Song culminating in the queerest Civil War Reenactment in history.  Oh…and a production of the Mikado set on Mars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThu\, Mar 22\, 2018\nCHAPTER III:  1896-1956\nA Jewish tenement\, a WWI trench\, a speak-easy\, a depression and a zoot suit riot all make the white people flee the cities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSat\, Mar 24\, 2018\nCHAPTER IV:  1956-Present\nBayard Rustin’s March on Washington leads to a queer riot\, sexual deviance as revolution\, radical lesbians and a community building itself while under siege.

SUMMARY:Taylor Mac\, A 24-Decade History of Popular Music (Abridged)\, Kennedy Center\, DC
DESCRIPTION:The D.C. premiere of this live vocal and theatrical presentation offers a radical\, queer reading of American history with fabulous entertainer Taylor Mac and local performers. \n“Mr. Mac gave me one of the great experiences of my life”—The New York Times \nThis hit show from drag artist Taylor Mac—the genre-defying winner of a 2017 MacArthur “Genius” Grant\,  recipient of the 2017 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama\, and a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama—uses songs of the time to chronicle our country from its founding in 1776 to today. Years in development\, the show was originally performed in 2016 as a one-time\, 24-hour event that made the New York Times annual list of Best Performances\, Theater\, and Music. \nThis condensed version is a highly immersive and outrageously entertaining crash course in the 240 years (and counting) of American culture and dysfunction. Highlighting various musical styles and artistic voices ranging from murder ballads to disco\, Walt Whitman to David Bowie\, this night is “startlingly unique… a must-see for anyone who wants to see a kinder\, gentler society” (Huffington Post).

SUMMARY:Matt Ray Plays Hoagy Carmichael\, Lincoln Center\, American Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Jazz pianist\, vocalist\, and “ingenious” arranger Matt Ray (New York Times) takes us through an evening highlighting the music of one of the essential architects of the classic American Songbook. To help him\, he enlists singer Kat Edmonson\, who delivers songs with an airy voice evocative of Blossom Dearie that invites audiences to “close their eyes and pick whatever time best suits their listening pleasure” (Charleston Post and Courier). Ray is best known for his work as music director for such downtown luminaries as Joey Arias\, Justin Vivian Bond\, Bridget Everett\, and Taylor Mac with whom he shared the 2017 Kennedy Prize for Drama for A 24-Decade History of American Popular Music. Like Ray\, the Texas-born\, Brooklyn-based Edmonson has internalized decades of American songs and styles. Together with other surprise guests\, they cast a spell over The Appel Room with personal favorites from Carmichael’s vast catalog\, which includes “Stardust\,” “The Nearness of You\,” and “Georgia on My Mind.”
