SUMMARY:Matt Munisteri Quartet @ Birdland Theater\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:It’s a daunting task\, this business of encapsulating Matt Munisteri’s musical self. As the sparkling guitarist on several chart-topping jazz CDs; a critically lauded songwriter and nimble lyricist; an urban banjo-warrior and a sometime session musician; a selfless and devoted sideman; a wry-yet-honest singer; an engaging and winning front-man; and an arranger whose ear-pulling re-inventions of well-traveled songs have contributed to Grammy winning CDs for artists such as Loudon Wainwright and Catherine Russell\, Matt’s various dueling career paths might at first seem difficult to reconcile. Additionally you’d be hard-pressed to find another Brooklyn native who grew up playing bluegrass banjo since he was in the single digits; who has recorded with artists as divergent as consummate jazz balladeer “Little” Jimmy Scott and 1980’s avante-noise godfather Glenn Branca; who is regarded as a contemporary master of 1920’s and ’30’s jazz styles\, and is an ardent student of American folk traditions\, but counts among his regular creative cohorts several musicians associated with the New York Downtown music world. Yet ultimately Matt’s journey through 20th century American music yields a vision which feels intrinsically whole\, with his own music always serving as one-of-a-kind reflection of a life immersed in all the far-flung variants of American Popular Song. Maybe it’s easier to say that whatever he’s currently up to\, it will be a living reconciliation of rural and urban\, long-gone and contemporary\, individual experience and canonized scripture. \n\n Fri\, Jun 27 Open: 5:30 pm | Show: 7:00 pm \nTickets\n Fri\, Jun 27 Open: 9:00 pm | Show: 9:30 pm \nTickets\n Sat\, Jun 28 Open: 5:30 pm | Show: 7:00 pm \nTickets\n Sat\, Jun 28 Open: 9:00 pm | Show: 9:30 pm \nTickets\n

SUMMARY:Bridget Everett & The Tender Moments @ Joe's Pub\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:Bridget Everett and The Tender Moments barrel back into Joe’s Pub! Bridget’s legendary and take-no-prisoners live act is a perennial sold-out hit and has garnered a faithful cult following. She has been seen in a string of recent television shows and movies\, but to experience Bridget is to experience her live. \nHer in-your-face comedy is mixed with one outrageous rocking and original song after another. Dripping with hard-earned sweat in her sparkling and revealing House of Larréon dresses\, she swigs from a bottle in a paper bag while telling stories about her dysfunctional family and her struggles with incontinence. \nGrab a ticket and hold on tight. Prepare yourself for motor-boating\, money notes and Chardonnay soaked memories. Shit is about to get ridiculous. This show is not for the faint of heart. Bring a chaperone. No two shows are the same\, ever.\npublictheater.org/performances-jp/2025/b/bridget-everett-the-tender-moments/

SUMMARY:Joe Alterman Trio @ Birdland\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:Joe Alterman is an Atlanta-born jazz pianist\, composer\, writer\, and cultural curator who channels the timeless joy of swing with youthful energy and heartfelt enthusiasm. Praised by legends like Ahmad Jamal as “a very special artist\,” Les McCann as “tiny but only in stature; as a man and musician\, he is already a giant\,” and Ramsey Lewis as “an inspiration” whose playing is “a joy to behold\,” Alterman has carved out a singular space in the jazz world. \nA graduate of New York University with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Jazz Piano Performance\, Alterman has performed at iconic venues including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, Birdland\, and Blue Note\, sharing stages with jazz greats like Houston Person\, Les McCann\, and Ramsey Lewis. Whether leading his trio or captivating audiences solo\, Alterman’s music has been described by Downbeat Magazine as “hard-swinging” and by the late journalist Nat Hentoff as “making people smile and\, if the room is right\, dance.” With a deep groove\, bluesy touch\, and an exuberance that’s hard to resist\, his playing is both deeply rooted and refreshingly modern. \nWith eight critically acclaimed albums to his name\, including the 2023 release Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & Little Joe\, Alterman continues to evolve as a recording artist while honoring jazz’s deep traditions. As George Benson once told him\, “You play good and you sound good\, and there’s a difference.” That difference—the ability to channel joy\, soul\, and deep connection through every note—is what sets Alterman apart. \nBeyond the piano\, Alterman’s creative reach extends into cultural leadership and writing. As the Executive Director of Neranenah\, an Atlanta-based Concert & Culture series\, he celebrates Jewish contributions to music and the arts. His writing has also garnered acclaim—he has penned liner notes for three Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra albums and was the subject of Nat Hentoff’s final piece on music\, in which the legendary journalist described Alterman’s essays as “some of the very best on the essence and spirit of jazz.” In 2025\, Alterman’s musicianship was further recognized when he was featured on President Jimmy Carter’s Grammy-winning album\, Last Sundays In Plains: A Centennial Celebration\, marking another milestone in his ever-expanding artistic journey. \nWhether performing on world-renowned stages\, leading cultural initiatives\, or writing about the music he loves\, Joe Alterman bridges the past and present of jazz\, delivering music that\, as Ramsey Lewis put it\, is “happy music with tasty meat on the bones.”
